On the evening of July 26 at our community picnic three very worthy individuals were awarded certificates.
Firefighter of the Year was awarded to Steve Bond who is employed by the Mica Kidd Island Bay Fire Dept. He was nominated by Chief Matue who writes that Steve has been a valuable asset to the department, he volunteers for anything that the district needs help with. He volunteered his time to become a Firefighter EMT for the district and is very motivated and driven for the betterment of this community.
Deputy of the Year was awarded to Deputy Douglas Goodman who was nominated by Sgt Ryan Odegaard. He writes this justification for his nomination: I have directly supervised Deputy Goodman for approximately three cycles during this year. During this time, Deputy Goodman has continually demonstrated a great attitude and outlook of his working environment and displayed a desire to work hard for this agency and the citizens of Kootenai County. Deputy Goodman has routinely demonstrated a passion for serving his community both as a peace officer and as a public servant. For example, this past winter after a heavy snow, Deputy Goodman received accolades for seeing a citizen in need of help clearing snow from their driveway. Deputy Goodman took it upon himself to shovel the driveway, while in uniform with all his duty gear on.
He is an avid team player/member and strives to bring our agency and the community closer together. Deputy Goodman handles his daily calls for service and is proactive in his enforcement efforts to ensure the safety of the citizens. During his contacts in both routine and high stress Deputy Goodman is excellent at establishing a connection with those he comes in contact with and truly demonstrates what it is to be a professional. If anyone embodies our vision statement at KCSO, it would be Deputy Goodman for his constant compassion for those he is responsible to serve, his professionalism within his training cadres and his team, and his integrity in all that he does. Deputy Goodman is also a veteran, having served with the US Navy from 1991– 1994.
Teacher of the Year was awarded to Jennifer Hass. Jennifer was picked from a field of several candidates this year after being nominated by the Jolly Workers of Mica 4H Club.
She states she is very excited to be teaching Geoscience and Physical Science for the 2023-2024 school year. She is a proud graduate of the Coeur d’Alene School District and has lived most of her life in this area. Jenn graduated from the U of I in 2003 and returned to Coeur d’Alene and split her passions for science and the arts through working in veterinary medicine and a portrait photography studio. She started her own photography studio in 2011 and worked there for ten years. In 2018 Jenn went back to school to earn her teaching certificate in Secondary Education. She taught 7th grade science for two years, having many opportunities to teach science in creative and fun ways. The opportunity then came to teach at Coeur d’Alene High School and she jumped at that opportunity. She is proud to be a part of the CHS family Go Vikes!
Jennifer is a wife and mother to three mini scientists. They enjoy traveling and exploring the natural world in their spare time.
